PART THREE: TROUBLE

After strolling through the dirty streets for close to an hour you wondered over whether you were actually doing anything inside the town. It seemed more as if Romania was showing off how scared people were of him, but all the walking went through the darker part of the street along the outskirts of the Blue Wall, a strange blue haze that worked to separate the vampires from the rest of the world. There did not seem to be anything of interest going on until Spain got a call to head back to the agency and you were left with Romania. It would have been fine except for the fact that he suddenly started prying into your personal life.

"So Austria the half-breed raised you? That's interesting… I suppose he sort of had the experience before hand from looking after HRE and Italy." Romania chuckled in delight, nibbling the side of his mouth with that one protruding fang. You wanted him to shut up, he did not know anything about Austria and he certainly did not know what it meant to call him a half-breed. Okay, so Austria was half-vampire and half-human, something gypsies called Dhampir and were normally female; it did not mean that Austria ever did anything the vampires did. He certainly never bit people or used spells or did anything creepy. In fact half the time you'd spent your childhood trying hard to find out why Mr Austria always looked so anxious and why he spent nearly all day at the piano when he was feeling weakest.

"Okay so he had the dresses all prepared… though honestly I don't know why he had them there! But just because he's half doesn't mean he's as rude as you are. He never read anyone's mind or did anything that would have scared me. He always made sure I felt safe, even if it meant he was not in a good way. So don't ever say anything about Austria that's meant to be bad in anyway – got it?" You growled in anger, but Romania did not get the hint and instead he decided to go down a different route that only made you want to push him into the next puddle.

"I was curious as to why he took you in… with your parents having been killed by vampires was there any chance they'd hurt you or that you might be a little special? I mean, Austria trained the other two, he actually called you his daughter and…" Romania gulped visibly when he felt your gun right under his chin. It was not loaded with the special UV Liquid caps, so he would not die but he would still be a mess and take a while to heal up properly.

You did not want to talk about such a thing and instead detoured toward the nearest cemetery where you could check the graves for any turned soil or signs of activity. There could be any kind of vampire around this area, and if the Upyr was recruiting then if he found any bad spirits in the graveyard they would be the easiest to make ghouls or companions out of. You hoped that there would be a section for the criminals and the victims of natural disasters – some of those people could be quite bitter about things and have so much unfinished business that they were the most common to turn into Strigoi and go after their families….

"Well I wasn't going to say that you were one of us… I thought maybe it was something different. Why do you think he took you in?" Well there was no luck with Romania shutting up as he tiptoed over the grave after you and seemed oblivious to the unnatural mist that was forming and making your spine tingle. You were not sure if you'd just stepped into the presence of a summoning ritual that you were damn well going to interrupt, or if the local weather system was in some special affects diploma scheme. Romania talking was not going to let you think of the situation and so you answered swiftly.

"He and my father were close business associates and even friends. He was my godfather and that's the only reason why I'm with him – apart from the fact that I had no family members left." You grumbled in annoyance, really wanting him to drop the situation. You had heard the same kind of questioning before when you had been a lot younger and Austria had been very strict about who you were able to hang around. Often he'd encouraged your work with vampire removal rather then have a social life and lots of people assumed so many bad things because of it.

"You've heard of the whole life-mate thing haven't you? That a vampire can marry a human if he shares blood with her. Sometimes they become Dhampir and though they live long they don't have the same need for blood and are much more mortal. Sometimes it kills them, and other times it does nothing until a child is born. Because we live so long we can fall for human females when they are only babies because something just tells us that they're the one…" Romania grinned viciously as he eyed up a few of the gravestones, seeming to note all the loving insignia about beloved wife or darling husband…. "I personally fell in love with a beautiful little girl when I was a boy myself at one of Austria's parties actually. It was quite a long time ago and the girl was quite a shy little thing but her parents were very against the interest of any vampire groups. In fact her father was a bit strange and had a real hatred for vampires – even hated Austria. I don't know if you ever knew that man. But I know Austria fell in love too, about the same time you joined his household."

"You think Austria would keep hold of a girl like me because I was his destined mate? That's stupid because he and Hungary were always bound together. You should know that – if you're saying things just to get on my nerves or see how far you can push me then forget it. I don't get angry about that kind of thing because I know it's not true. Austria has always been like my father and I will only ever regard him as such." You growled angrily and tried to swallow back the anxiety. But then Romania said something that stopped you in your tracks.

"You ever thought that maybe the reason you survived was because you were different? That maybe Austria took pity on you because you were just as mixed up as…"

SLAP!

It caught Romania and you by surprise and the sound echoed through the mists of the graveyard. Your eyes remained stern and focused your restrained yourself from any other motion so that your rigid expression would be enough to halt the conversation. You were there to work, and that's what you would do from now on! With a gentle growl you turned aside, only to suddenly have Romania cup your face in his hand. Your eyes locked, and though you suddenly felt like crying because of the vivid red mark you had given him, his expression was so sincere that for the first time in a long time, you actually believed what he said.

"I didn't say that to hurt you _____ - I shouldn't have gone there and I'm sorry. I just wondered if maybe…" For a moment you were shocked by the fact that your body was willingly leaning closer to him and that you accepted it as his thumb pressed the bottom of your lip. He seemed to be giving you all the signs that he was going to kiss you and for that moment you were eager for the contact. But then you saw the fang and you quickly turned your head away.

"You vampires are all the same; love to irritate us hunters into…. Wagh!" You screamed as the ground shifted beneath you. You looked to the grave and noticed the skull and crossbones on the headstone – a plague victim! You leapt away from the softening earth as the rickety bones of a zombie struggled free and began to search around it impatiently for some attention. You knew the cue and straightaway the gun was out from under your coat and you had put a bullet in its head. The ground exploded with more similar creatures and Romania quickly began to dispose them all too, simply putting his hand through the skull and letting them dust around him.

These were not ghouls or Strigoi, they were just the typical brainless drones used for distraction that never really did anything but stumble around and then dusted after a few hours of motion. With your eyes darting back and forth you chucked for the cause of the spells. There, by one of the large angel statues was a little red fez. You rushed over and quickly you realised that the fez was not on a head and it was another decoy. As you turned to face what you knew was behind you, for the first time in your life you realised that this mistake would cost you and the moment you felt the fangs in your throat your ears echoed with Romania's scream….
UH-OH! You got bitten, what’s going to happen to you?
