Part Six: Dragon Scales

A day passed by and Denmark had carried you back to your cave and kept you comfortable whilst the shock of it all wore off. He had been very concerned and as you had begun to wake up to the reality of the situation, you’d noticed that the dragon had become a little “shorter”. The animal though had ignored your suggestions and amused on the idea that you were become less scared of him but you’d always been good for noticing the little things. As much as you would love to say that you were less shy of the dragon, enough to make him seem like a large cow rather then a man-eater, there was no truth in the concept.

With the day shining bright and Denmark eager to have a swim in the lake, you paced obediently at his side toward the water and watched him slip in. It was as amusing as watching any great lumbering animal clamber into the water, especially as the great dark creature seemed to flop onto his side and expect the water to cover him. With the sun warm upon your body and feeling more confident then ever, you decided that today you’d go into the water with the dragon. You also hoped that he would answer your questions too.

As the dragon seemed to just lie on his side looking bored but comfortable, you removed the harem pants you were wearing and also your soft cream-coloured dress. Wearing nothing but your light pink corset and your silky underwear, you strolled tentatively toward the cold water and delicately dabbed your toe into it. With a shriek, you leapt from the sudden cold against your foot, pacing in a nervous circle to try and bring up your courage to get in the water. Denmark’s great head swung around to look at you, bringing with it a spray of slightly muddy cold water to splash over your clothes. You gave a gentle curse after giving a squeak and Denmark seemed to grin at you.

“Are there dragons everywhere in the world? Do they all have to have a bride?” You questioned as you sucked in whatever courage you had and ran into the water. It was very cold at first, but as soon as it was deep enough for the water to be up to your neck, the temperature was not that cold. In fact, it was quite pleasant and you breathed a gentle sigh of relief before wadding in a little deeper and pushing off the dirt bottom. There were not many plants or bugs in the water, probably because it was constantly displaced by Denmark’s great body, but you were not bothered by the idea of swimming in “wild” water. You padded toward Denmark’s form and gently splashed him.

“Yes… it was an agreement made in order to stop the killing between our kinds. If the humans did not give us a bride we would seek out our own kind and reproduce millions over to swarm upon the land. It’s a small sacrifice on their part to give up one person every half a century or so to keep us company in our long lives. For us though it can be much more threatening as we cannot become fathers or even hang around our own kind much.” His words were spoken with an air of sorrow despite the fact that he flicked water back at you with a smile. Your heart sank at the words and cautiously you paddled closer and then hooked your arm onto his shoulder. The great dragon turned about to look at you cautiously. You understood that this was obviously a very sensitive subject for the dragons but it sounded so strange.

“That sounds terrible! Surely it must cause some dragons to go mad anyway?” You blurted suddenly, surprised where the confidence to say such a thing might have come from. The dragon just grinned and shoved his muzzle under the water. You eyed him cautiously before shrieking in delight as he lifted his head slightly, like a hippo sitting on the surface of a river, and then sprayed a lot of water out of his nose. You were completely soaked in a second and forced yourself to let go of his shoulder. You held your breath and ducked under the water, as you did so Denmark lowered his muzzle so that you opened your eyes to look straight into his. For a moment you were stunned at how kind and how human the eyes were, even to a point where you opened your mouth.

“Hang on.” Denmark growled into the water, making it rumble around you. He gently stuffed his nose under your body and lifted you straight out of the water. Your body trembled at the feel of the cold air and yet you were annoyed that Denmark wanted you out of the water. He sat you on the shore and gently gave a low hot growl over some old reeds that quickly cracked under fire. He nosed the embers toward you, encouraging you to warm yourself beside it as he spoke. “If I recall, my water-dragon friend Japan nearly went mad one time until he heard music. Some beautiful maiden was given up to him in the hopes of appeasing him and to do so she began to play music and sing for him. At least I think it was Japan… it could have been China!”

“So you need a bride to keep you from becoming extinct I suppose. Yet, I don’t understand how Matthias and the other vampires become involved in it all. Why are they needed?” You were fascinated by the words as you pulled your hair around and gently wrung it out beside the water. You rubbed your body to knock the water off and after a little patting and rubbing; you were dry enough to put your dress back on, though you had to take off your soggy corset. Denmark had gone silent; he’d tuned his head toward the sun as you’d spoke and as you’d changed. When you were dressed again you looked up at him nervously. Something seemed very wrong indeed… “Denmark?”

“In time… you’ll be able to understand that.” Denmark seemed to sigh and without a second thought he stood up and opened his wings. Stepping out of the water, with the drips spilling off him and watering the flowers, you felt as though you might have just offended him. He turned toward you, snorting a smoke ring and almost glaring at you in a way that made your body shudder – as if a demon were floating behind you and about to kill you – before he flapped a little. “I’m going out tonight. Prussia has been getting too close to my boarders so I must check on what he is doing. Go back to the cave and take care of yourself. There should be food there, if you wish for food.”

With that he was gone and you felt your heart sink. Was there something very serious between him and Matthias that you could not understand? Without being able to stop yourself, the tears began to dribble down your cheeks and you pulled yourself out of the water and sat down against your favourite tree. Pulling your knees up to shield your face, you buried your forehead upon your knee cap and sobbed for what seemed like hours. You could not explain why you wanted to cry, only that you felt so wretched for whatever you’d done to upset him.

* * * * *

When darkness came and you had been sitting alone upon your bed with a new book in your hand, the familiar sound of the cave opening did not alter your mood. You felt low and weakened by the fact you had upset Denmark, but more then anything you had been thinking hard of the words of the other dragons. Even Lukas had mentioned the need for blood… for so long you’d not given it to Matthias and it was obvious the vampire and the dragon were connected somehow. You had no choice, you had to give Matthias blood today… even if it terrified you.

As you watched Matthias stroll inside, looking just as downhearted as you, something flashed in your mind. Matthias looked sickly and to your surprise you could see the veins upon Matthias’ body criss-crossing to make scale-like markings upon his skin. Yes… they must be connected and this was probably why Denmark was so upset. Your dragon “husband” obviously wanted you to give blood to Matthias, but he probably had been too unsure to ask.

“Good evening ____, you look so sad. Have you been crying?” Matthias murmured as he approached, only to pause when he saw how dewy your eyes were. He noted too that tear stains remained on your cheeks, even though you had stopped crying hours ago. The concern upon his face made his eyes sparkle with emotion, he paced to your side, knelt upon the ground and gently lifted his hands up to clasp yours. You looked down at him and concern seemed to pour from his usually cocky form. “What’s wrong ___?”

You looked at him nervously, trembling suddenly at the feel of the cold of his hands… that was not normal surely? You could not feel that typically warm air around the cheerful being and that made your heart sink. Did he need to blood to make him warm? With your body shaking gently he looked toward you pityingly and your eyes met. Only then did you recognise the familiarity… Denmark and Matthias had the same eyes…

Your mind began to click with different thoughts and different answers to the questions within your mind. What could be the connection? Denmark had said they could not have sons… with other dragons… but they had human brides? Was Matthias the son of the dragon? It would certainly answer several questions niggling at your mind. But how did that happen? Suddenly you paled at the troubling question within your mind – how could a dragon and a human reproduce?

“___, you look like you’re going to faint… Are you alright?” Matthias looked sweetly at you and you felt your heart sink even deeper. It pounded too with a sudden electric beat that heated your body in a sudden flush that nearly did make you faint. Patiently, Matthias lifted a hand to stroke your hair and relax you. He was such a welcoming present… goodness you could not believe it but you were having feelings for him. These weren’t just brotherly or friendly… you felt an urge to be at his side and this encouraged you to roll up the sleeve of your dress and push your wrist toward him. His eyes watered with tears of both joy and grief at what was needed. “Are you sure?”

“You need it.” Was all you were able to say before you turned your head aside and bit your lip. Trembling you were afraid of the pain you might experience and it was hard to stop shaking or attempt to pull your wrist away as he pinched your wrist to encourage the veins to show. You were fearful but when you felt his warm breath upon your skin, your hairs lift up with a gentle shudder and the burning heat of his lips upon your skin, you could not help but turn to look at him. As you looked at Matthias you were startled that he was not sucking the blood, he just seemed to be constantly kissing your arm but his cheeks were flushing and you were startled when he looked up at you.

In that moment you were startled by the love drunk look in Matthias’ eyes. His eyes were so brilliantly bright and glowing that you could swear he was changing into something else. But then when he pulled his lips away from your arm and you feared it would be coated in red liquid… even though the idea was making you faint… you looked to your wrist but there was nothing more then two red flecks.

“Your blood is so sweet ____... it tells me a lot about you.” Matthias chuckled gently as he turned your arm back around and softly kissed your knuckles. You blushed in surprise and yet when Matthias lowered your hand, he straightened himself and pulled you in against him. You lifted your hands up protectively, the heat of his chest seeming to burn your skin and yet for the first time ever with a man you felt safe and not so shy. You smiled warmly as he twisted his arms around you in a gently embrace and naturally you leant your head against his shoulder. “Tak…. Tak… Thank you… thank you.”

But then something strange happened, his heart seemed to beat in a way you were sure belonged to someone else… maybe all hearts beat like that. However as you both broke away from the hug your cheek brushed his; suddenly Matthias jerked you to the side. Before you could do anything or even make a noise, his lips locked firmly over yours and you pressed your lips back against him. It was hot, warm and moist but at the same time you were very afraid of something as he leaned you back like some hero in a story.

Was this betraying the “marriage” you had with Denmark?

So, it’s nice to be with Matthias for a little while and thank goodness you’ve let him take blood. But you let him kiss you too? How long will that last?
