PART TEN - Rescued

"Berwald's Meatballs? Sounds rude when you say it aloud but they're damn tasty!" You were surprised by the suddenly quizzical expression forming on Sweden's face. He seemed almost to be pleased at your odd term for the meal, but maybe it was more pleasure that you were enjoying it. He however was eating his special fish dish which... well... even the smell had made you pass out.

"Do you always talk when you eat?" Sweden questioned in his dry tone, and for a moment you were worried. Were you offending him by talking? You knew he did not like to talk much himself, but right now talking aloud and getting a response from someone was pushing all the terror of what had happened out of your head.

"I suppose I do…. I'm so used to have lengthy conversations as we fight over who gets the last bread roll on the table at home. Plus, I think it's just a little bit of comfort now. Uh… I don't mean to be rude but whose cabin is this?" You looked around; glad of the snow that had been falling during your escape because you'd developed a cold as the smell of smoked fish had been less. Sweden just gave a gentle grunt whilst eating, perhaps you should not have asked that question, if only because all the items in the plain looking wood room suggested calm and quiet being who liked to remain neutral and did not often have guests. "Is this your house? Only it's really cosy!"

"Ja is my home." Sweden stated bluntly and for once you were relieved he sounded so relaxed about it. You knew that with Sweden you would never have to worry about being hurt, but there was something bothering him. You could feel it when he lifted his head up to stare at your trembling body, you could not stop shaking, and suddenly a big grey blanket was cast over you. Swiftly you coiled it around yourself and thanked him. But with a grunt Berwald seemed a little unhappy. "You had hoped it was Russia who saved you."

"What?" You were surprised, was this jealousy? You didn't have much time then to have thought over it; but it was close to the truth. Not because she did not appreciate Berwald being her superhero, it was more the fact that she had hoped it was Russia to know he was alright. To confirm what her angels had told her…. "In that situation you don't care really, do you?"

"Be Honest. You are still worried about him and it would have been more comforting to know he had saved you." Berwald gave a grunt, turning his head away, almost as if he was upset. You felt awful, he was your partner who'd stand beside you in a fight and always pull you out of danger any day of the week, so why had you not expected him to save you? It was his job to save you; it was yours to save him too! But how could you explain to him that this was due to what the angels had told you? Sweden was a Christian yes, but for him it only played a small role in his life and he would not appreciate any conversation outside of religion to enter religion. He knew as a lapse Catholic that you were raised to believe and see the signs, but you both did not enjoy talking about it. So how to explain this?

"I suppose so, he saved me before and I just expected it. Not only that, but I do have feelings for him; I just can't seem to explain them to myself. You see... I think I met him when I was a child.... But don't worry about that, I'm just getting too chatty." You chuckled gently before sucking in a deep breath through your gritted teeth and feeling an odd sense of compassion sweeping over you from Sweden. Once again you felt a stab of pain in your chest, and as you winced, Berwald lent over and gently passed you a roll of bandages to dress yourself in for a bit of support, turning his head aside. s you got down to looking at the bruises and the way everything needed to be padded up to stop it falling apart, your ended up giving a little sob and Berwald reacted with conversation.

"You were hurt by them; I will not let anyone do that without punishment. When we are all together again, we will fight them and get rid of this once and for all. But I do not think you should fight anymore - you've worked so hard, perhaps its time you finally used some vacation days." Berwald gave a slight grunt at the end, which almost sounded like a chuckle and you smirked at him, despite the pain. Once again the fact that he was always the same, always reliable, and always there gave you a feeling of normality and for once you had to agree with him. You were starting to seriously re-think your career after all of this.

"I know, and I appreciate it. Perhaps I should go away somewhere. It would make things a lot easier to be sure… but I can't go without knowing where he is, where Germany is…. I need to know that Russia is safe and I need him to be with me. It sounds so stupid, but my angel told me I need him." You almost choked after stating something religious – that was one way to make a Nordic uneasy.

There was silence between you both, it was very uncomfortable.

"I have always thought of myself as not interested in women. But every time I see you, I just want to be with you. It isn't just at work where I must be with you… in my sleep I think about you and I enjoy it. I like meeting your family, I like knowing that I am part of your world outside of work as well as in. This is a dangerous feeling, but I worry it might be love." Sweden suddenly stated soberly, making you jolt slightly in surprise.

"How do you know its love and not just a need to protect?" You questioned nervously. You didn't like the way this was going; you'd never had these kind of conversations before when you'd been sitting with a cup of ____ staring at the night sky whilst on a stake out in a freezing cold car.

"We will see." Suddenly he leant in; cupping your face gently in his big hands and you froze. He kissed you! He actually pressed his lips against yours and though you wanted to pull away it just seemed so impolite. The feeling was strange, it was only a quick little press of heat and the slight brushing of a tongue, but no hand reached for your ___ hair to pull you closer. No urge or heat rose in your body to push you closer and encourage more motion. It was purely an experimental thing, and all too quickly Berwald pulled away and you waited nervously as he seemed to remain frozen in thought.

"Have you figured it out then?" You muttered nervously, feeling the blush on your face and the slight hint of one on his. Oh how you hoped he would say it was not love, how you hoped it had been Ivan who had been kissing you just then. Part of you wanted to cry, Berwald knew you had no romantic affections toward him so it would be easier if that kiss had not happened!

"It is love." He stated, almost sombrely. You looked upset for a moment, he understood your feelings but damn for once you wished the events of the past few days had never happened. But the night was drawing in and Sweden soon left you to settle down and have a sleep….

* * * * *

"I'm dreaming again aren't I?" You muttered when you woke up and felt that comforting feeling of Russia beside you. You could smell that same soft scent and you could sweat that his gloved hand was holding one of yours. This must be some stupid dream caused by the guilt for letting Sweden kiss you!

"Nyet, Mr Sweden was kind enough to pass the message onto me about where you were. Your brother Scotland apparently noticed England was doing something weird and kicked two of his teeth out until he told the truth. Then they went looking for us and it was Italy who told them where we'd gone. They got to me, but you and Germany had already disappeared…." You jolted around, rolling to see the smiling face of Russia looking down at you, a tin teacup in his hand, steaming gently.

"Ivan?" You gasped, only to lunge on him and knock the tea over his coat.

"Heaven's to the Betsy that hurts!" Ivan screeched in surprise, leaping away from you and straight outside.

Once again another stupid thing had happened and you spent ten minutes scuttling back and forth apologising as Russia rolled around in the snow outside and Sweden spent the whole time laughing his head off. But all too soon you realised that there was a fourth member of the group coming around the corner and your heart sank to see that it was Italy and not Germany. Even so, Italy had an idea of how to help you both, and even Sweden made no objections….
Sorry it took so long to get up, been distracted for a while.

Well thank goodness, Russia’s fine but nowhere is safe! Who’s going to help you all out while Germany’s still missing and Feliciano isn’t the bravest person in the world?
