Fading Memories

A Hitsugaya x Fem! Story

For this story, Toshiro Hitsugaya is about 19 in age and looks and the character of Sojiro Kusaka is now a female named Katie Kusaka.
This story is a request by :iconaqua-amethyst-angel: and so Katie is (C) :iconaqua-amethyst-angel:
The events in this story are supposed to be an alternate prequel to the events in the movie Diamond Dust Rebellion, though it is an alternative idea where the Toshiro is actually an adult in looks. Also that Kusaka was not executed but had their power taken away so they couldn't use the same zanpakto anyway.

* * * * *

Bright and familiar eyes met him amongst the throng of people in the Rukon District as Captain of Tenth Divison, Toshiro Hitsugaya, had been on his way back from a visit to his old friend. The eyes bore into him with a curious but frightening intent that pinned him in place and all at once he felt his heart thumping with terror and joy. He could not mistake those eyes, but he wished they had mistaken him.

"Toshiro? I should have guessed it was you though you've grown a lot." The eyes blinked and the owner, a young woman with dark purple-black hair, deep brown eyes, and a lean appearance, though she was quite beautiful. Although no aura or sense to include her as a soul reaper existed, the captain of tenth squad seemed under the opinion that it was his fault, and this person should not be greeting him so cheerfully. In fact, this person should not even be so close to the Sereitei when they had been banished from their loss of power....

"Uh... Miss Kusaka... I thought you were living in district twenty-seven under guard..." Toshiro gave a yelp of surprise as she lunge at him and hooked her arms around his neck and pulled him down into a warm hug. Toshiro had finally managed to grow a little, at least into the same teenage area of growth that most other soul reapers were at. His hair still remained the same, but his body was taller and his arms longer with a little more muscle definition. His hands were worn from being near ice and doing more training with his sword. But of all was his countenance, his eyes still large and like a sea of ice yet his face was neater and mature....

In every aspect he was truly handsome and the instant embrace had startled him somewhat. Toshiro had been getting love-letters and attention from the girls to the extent that he'd even hired Hisagi to answer his fan-mail, or at least scan it for propositions before the head of the Sereitei magazine sent it on to tenth squad. Occasionally he would miss one, Rangiku would find it, and thus the kind of torment between sister and brother would commence!

"Oh Toshiro don't be so formal. Aren't you glad to see me?" Katie Kusaka chuckled happily and kissed his cheek softly. Toshiro blushed visibly at her kind smile and lowered his head somewhat. He felt awful for what had happened to her in the past, especially when they had studied so hard together and well… to be honest he'd always had a crush on her. "Come on Toshiro, you're off duty so lets sit on a roof top and nibble a few treats hey?"

Toshiro had been surprised how quickly he had agreed and how easily his tongue had stuck in his throat. Butterflies rose in his stomach and he was anxious as he followed her. Even when she touched his hand the anxiety of her noticing his sweaty palms made him blush further. His hair almost seemed to be blushing too! But soon they found a comfortable spot on a roof where they could see a pond beneath some blossom trees. The gentle breeze was making flowers fall and dance on the water surface before the koi nipped at the petals. For a while you had joked before Katie seemed swept away in the peace of the moment.

"It's very different out here, suddenly what you cared about so much has gone away and you're suddenly relaxed but alone and unsure. I've been finding jobs here and there of course, but at times it's almost as if you don't have a purpose around here. I miss being a Soul Reaper… and I miss being able to talk to you like Momo always has." Katie sighed as she lay in her blue kimono with one knee slightly raised and the wind tugging gently at a few loose strands. It had been such a long time, and though Toshiro had not really been the one to take the power away, their sword had been the same and he was the one to use it.

"Katie… I wish it could be that way again, but in begging for your life the restrictions were placed and I don't know how you've snuck away now!" Toshiro blurted, almost growling in anger but Katie continued to watch the water as serenely as ever. Toshiro sighed, turning away from her a brief moment before lowering his head in shame. "Forgive me; I'm acting like it's your fault and really it's my own. I always seem to have someone to yell at for not doing their fair share but when there's no one to blame but ancient rules… I get a little peeved."

"Do you know what the King's Seal is Toshiro? You're a soul reaper captain now, you should know a little..." Katie sighed gently as she continued to sit on the roof top eating the sweets beside him and watching the blossoms drop into the pond. Her words made Toshiro gag and choke for a second. He turned to her with his eyes wide and face slightly stern.

"I might have heard of it, but why should it interest you Katie? You're not a Soul Reaper anymore so why would it be mentioned around you?" Toshiro could only grind his teeth and crunch his hands together so his knuckles paled. He was not sure what she was getting at but for a seeming civilian, whose previous rank amongst the society was low anyway, to know about forbidden things was suspicious. Toshiro was getting suspicious of everything back inside the Soul Society recently and perhaps there was something he was missing outside the Sereitei that was more important....

"I heard a rumour when I was working at a bar." Katie sighed, her eyes seeming to darken with a painful memory and Toshiro ground his teeth more in anxiety. He was not going to ask what she was working as, but he could tell by the darkness that seemed to cling to her that it had been below her. Even now, it was hard for Toshiro to think of her as anything but the bouncy girl that had tapped his shoulder so gently when he'd been all alone in class and so happily introduced herself. He watched her mouth as it seemed to harden along with her voice. "They say you can use it to turn back time and change events. If I had it I would use the power to go back to deal with that stupid law, or at least to make it so my soul reaper powers were not gone! I would do anything for such a chance as to return to what I thought was normal!"

Her hands gripped sharply around the bag of sweets and Toshiro gulped heavily. Then, without a thought as to why, he stretched out a cool hand and placed it firmly over hers though she gasped suddenly at the sensation. Pinching it tightly he pulled it up between their faces and drew her dark eyes toward his brilliant blue. For a moment they remained locked together, the anger and bitterness they had bitten back dissolving as they watched one another.

"Do not think anymore about it Kusaka. You mean too much to me; if you sought out that item you would be killed and I could not even begin to save you. Promise me, you won't do it." Toshiro mumbled, but already his eyes had softened and his mouth remained partially open with pursed lips. Without a reply Katie leant in and against his lips with her own warm ones and they remained locked in a firm embrace.

It was brief, but for them the message; the promise to one another was clear. Toshiro then broke it and stretched out a hand to stroke the side of her face. Katie blushed profoundly as she pressed the side of her face to it and gripped his other hand. They stared at one another, smiled at one another, and wanted to lean in for another kiss when a familiar presence made Toshiro startle.

He turned around to spot Rangiku wandering the street below the house and swore allowed. With a shake of his head he turned back to Katie but she was gone. Toshiro looked about himself, questioning himself alone about where she might have gone and whether she had really been there at all. Then Rangiku hauled herself up next to him with a groan of annoyance.

"Captain! I've been searching everywhere for you and now I find you're up here with sweets! I thought you were a grown young man, not a kid!" She groaned before taking the bag of sweets and unashamedly scoffing a few. Toshiro remained looking at the water of the pond, confused at how a small patch hand frozen with a small purple blossom sitting upon it. "Captain, what's wrong?"

"Just fading memories gripping at my heart, Matsumoto... nothing to concern yourself with." Toshiro sighed gently and with deep regret as he looked out at the throngs of people and could not identify Katie amongst them. But suddenly Rangiku's hands were leaning on his shoulders with a grin.

"OOH! Captain that's not only poetic but strangely romantic... what have you been up to?" Rangiku chuckled and pinched playfully at his cheek. The throbbing vein in Toshiro's forehead appeared and as he hunched his shoulders up in that all too familiar, teeth-grinding irritation, he suddenly muttered with venom....

"SHOULDN'T YOU BE WORKING?"
I hope this is to your liking, I had to do a lot of extra research for it; it’s been a while since I’ve bothered with Bleach but I always enjoy it.
